Nordstrand NJ4's? What can compete with them?

Looking to replace the stock pickups in my Warwick Corvette Standard with some old school single coil jazz bass pups. I always hear about Nordstrands but what else might be as good or better?

I've been searching around and there are so many well thought of pickup makers.

Noticing single coil jazz pups from Fralin, Lollar, OC Duff, Curtis Novak, Vintage Vibe, etc. Tried any of them?

I'm also wondering what kind of effect the Ovangkol/Bubinga/Wenge construction of the Warwick might affect the sound of the pups. Aren't most Jazz Basses alder or ash and maple sometimes with a rosewood board? How much effect will the wood have on the tone of the bass?

Well of course wood is going to affect your tone so if you are looking for vintage vibe then your alreadys starting off with something in a different direction with the Warwick. (Not a bad thing or a dig...It is what it is).

Your Wick is going to already have that very mid rangy vibe that I feel is a principal part of tone of Warwick that is difficult to put into words.

I would suggest going for the more open sounding NJ4s with the 70's wind with its more of open sound so to speak and slight less mid presence would be the way to go if I was going to put a set in a Warwick. IMHO

I use nothing but Nordstrands now in my 4 strings and have tried a lot of pickups and have done a lot of experimenting with them. I personally love their tone, natural sound, and evenness to them. There are a lot of great pickups out there these are just my favorite and are tool they help me achieve what I'm trying to produce in my head.

If your bass tend to bright tone I'd suggest NJ4, if it leans toward to a muddy vibe you should get the NJ4 70's wind.

Lollar JB is also a nice choice, very even, vintage vibe, great balanced tone.
