Nordstrand NJ4SE's: Are they too dark?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Modulus VJ4 that I pulled out the Bart N4J's from and put in the Nord NJ4SE's. There is some similarity to the two of them, but I was hoping for some more mid to upper mid presence (600-2k) in them. I know the graphite neck of the Modulus makes that range a little vacant anyway. I do like the low mids and the quietness of the hum-cancelling pickups, so I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

check out tb'r sgd lutherie's neo pickups. the clips of his humcancellers sounded pretty dang grindy. otherwise, the rest of the standard side by side or stack humcancellers all share the upper mid scoop youre talking about ime. i havent heard them all, but every set ive heard to date from the mainstream guys (dimarzio, duncan, nordstrand etc) have that polite j sound.

I've had the NJ4SE pickups for some time now ...

Switched them from bass to bass looking for more grind rather than the smooth tone they have. I was just about to sell them until I tried them with an Audere VVT pre amp, with the switch set to Hi-Z mode the grind is back!

... They are keepers now.

Thanks for the info, fellas. The Audere option is one I have considered in the past, but may end up on the front burner again. I did listen to the SGD Neo's and they do sound good.....I may look at those as well......too many options.......
