I'm Looking for that kind of tone in particular, because i will order a custom bass from a luthier, and he offers Fat Stack, Big Singles, and Dual Coils, i would like to hear from real experiences! Thankyou

Thankyou | so many other variable come into play, but in general, if everything else is right, none of those pickup models is right for that sound. |

Carey makes a classic 70's wound single coil, and I would assume that would get you as close as anyone would need to get, as Narud says, if the rest of the formula is relatively right... ash/maple, 70's spacing, etc.
If you are just after a bright single coil type tone as an option, the dual coils with a single coil switch sound quite nice in single coil mode, although not particularly grindy and rough in the upper mids like Marcus' tone to my ear. |

So you guys think that i will get a modern single coil sound instead of classic?

I had the Big Singles in a J style instrument for a while, and they sounded great, but sounded much more like HC soapbars than grindy, aggressive single coils. Again, not doggin' the pickups, and any of those are capable of a GREAT slap tone, but they in no way cop that raw sort of edge that the 70's wound type singles give you.
If that is the tone you are after, Carey makes a pickup that is literally designed for that general tone... the 70's would single J pickup.
If you are just looking for a nice slap tone in general, it is a rare bass or pickup that won't provide that. |

Since the Big Singles don't really have much of that single coild J thing anyway, and since the Big Splits sound SO similar, I'd go with the Splits. Great looking pickups, fat and warm but very present up top, hum cancelling (which is kind of cool since a Big Split in 60's position totally solo'd is a thing of beauty.
Any of your choices will sound great, and since I believe all the 'Big' pickups are the same size, at the very worst, you can swap out for a different flavor if it doesn't float your boat.
If you are, one the other hand, really set on somewhat mimicing the Marcus tone, then build a 70's J bass spec, stick a good preamp in there, and if you are going with Nordstrands... get the 70's wound singles... done. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
