What are your opinions about them? I am looking for a set of J split coils.

Nordstrand Pups

I have a set of Nordstrand NJ4 pickups (single coils). I love them. They sit in the mix better than most other pickups. If you want to be "out front" sound wise they may not do it for you.

Agree with jdwinva... some of the best pickups available, in my opinion. I currently have some of the 70's wind singles in my jazz bass and they are amazing. I've owned dual coils as well, which were also fantastic pickups. I will likely be purchasing some of the NJ5's for an upcoming fretless as well.

I say get 'em!

different style pickup, but I replaced the stock pup on my EBMM Sterling fretless with a Nordstrand MM4.2, and I get a lot of compliments on the sound.

I have Nordie split coils in my JO5 mated with an Audere pre-amp. Expensive upgrade but worth it. The sound kills. Booty for days!

Great, versatile pickups. Carey is a great guy to deal with, he makes a quality product, and the pickups are leagues above most stock instruments. As well, his split-coil jazz pickups sound much more like a true single coil than many of the other splits that I've tried.

i have the single coils in my fender deluxe. They are such great pickups , they cut through the mix really well. I would really consider them for any future bass.

The split coils you are thinking about are great as well, the only difference is that you dont get the Hum (split coils the hum). I definatelly reccomend them.

I put a Nord P5 in my Fender Am Std 5 String P bass and it nails the classic P bass sound to a tee. I am extremely pleased with it. I imagine everything Cary makes is excellent across the board.

I have the NJ4SE's in a Modulus Vintage Jazz. They are quiet and sound great in this bass. The 'SE's' tend toward the beefier, lower mid side of the 'J' spectrum. I understand the NJ4SV's are more tradition, 'vintage' jazz sound (more upper mids, less lower mid and bass). Either way, great pups.........

Nordstrands sound great. This work is awesome and his business is first class all the way. I have dealt with him more than once and been impressed each time.

He is the OEM for most Sadowsky pickups. That has to say something about him.

Agreed. Both sound great, and both a very "jazzy", but the E's are a bit more of a "modern" jazz kind of sound. The V's sound more like a single coil. Although, both are hum cancelling.

Which do you prefer out of the NJ4SE's and NJ4SV's?

I was thinking about getting an NJ4SV. Has just two leads, correct? Do I still use the 250 pot, or do I need a 500?

Agreed.

Replaced the Bart's in my Roscoe with Fat Stacks through an Aguilar OBP-3. It's quite possibly the most ridiculous jazz bass tone I've ever heard in my life. I even haven't had the guts to drill a hole in the body for the taps yet....

Swap the vol pot for a push/pull and you don't have to drill any holes

Carey recommends 250k for all his products.

I have the Np4 in my p bass and its great. Its very grindy and gets an almost 70s p bass tone. Its the perfect pickup for my p bass. I have no experience with any other nordstrand pickups although i want to try the split coils in a jazz bass soon.
