Which Nordstrand soapbars?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been following the 'Nordstrand Rocks' and 'Carey for President' threads and am thinking about replacing the custom Basslines soapbars in my Ken Lawrence with some Nordstrand soapbars. The bass is a light swamp ash 5-string with a maple fretboard. It's good for the Marcus vibe, but I'd like a little more booty and I'm thinking that humbuckers would fit the bill nicely. I'm assuming that series-wired pickups would work better for me than parallel and that the dual coil pickups would be a better match for my bass than the fat stacks or big singles.

If there are any folks out there that have experiences with these pickups I'd appreciate your feedback. I have had a brief correspondance with Stew at Nordstrand and he basically told me that I seem to know what would work with my bass, but it's always nice to have other opinions.

The first step is to make sure that they will fit your bass. Second, it's important to understand that evern though the shapes are the same size, the Fat Stack/Big Single pickups and Dual Coils are very different in tone. The 'Stacks are more of a jazz bass influenced pickup, whereas a the DC model is not...it is its own animal (what most people identify as a modern, hi-fi, boutique bass tone).

I am very happy with the growl of my (heavy) northern ash Brase I with the original double coil pickups (SD they are). If you'd like to add a bit more growl to your sound then IMHO the series Nordstand would suit the bill. It will add a bit more to the mids part of the sound (a bit more volume too, i think). IMHO light ash bodies do not give as much low mid punch as heavy ash, so the series DC would give it a boost there
