It really depends on what "best" means to you.

Personally I've got an Audere (3ZB) and Nordstrand Fat Stacks and I love the combination. But Big Singles would be great too as would Dual Coils. The only ones I haven't heard personally are the Big Splits, but they've gotten good reviews as well. It depends on the tone you want.

I was going to go w/ the NJ4 line.. It seems like everyone here is hyping the Nordstrand's with the Audere and I wasn't sure if it was a specific model..

I'm going to guess from you mentioning the JZ3 preamp which is a replacement for a Jazz bass plate that you're asking about the Nordstrand Jazz shape pickups. If your bass is routed for soapbar pickups, then TheBigO has some great suggestions.

For a pickup in a jazz casing, you have 3 choices from Nordstrand.

NJ4 - Single coil - "Vintage Jazz bass +"

NJ4SV - Split-coil humbucker - A humbucker, but as close in tone to the single coil NJ4 as possible.

NJ4SE - Split-coil humbucker - Sometimes referred to as more "modern" or "thicker" toned than the NJ4SV.

Resources:
Bass Player Magazine review of all three pickups
SMASH's review of the NJ4
SMASH's review of the NJ4SE

My Experience:
My bass has a set of the NJ4SVs and the Audere 3ZB preamp, which is pretty much the JZ3 without the control plate.

My summary: WOW!

Smash's review of the NJ4s is pretty much spot-on with regards to the NJ4SVs, except to my ear these pickups don't seem to have a "pronounced bottom" as Smash noted of the NJ4s. They're even, balanced across the tonal spectrum, and the tone is gorgeous. They work extremely well with the Audere preamp. The Z-mode controls provide an astounding amount of versatility.

Oops, that's what I get for reading too fast. My decision was between the soapbar Nordstrands, not the Jazz style PUs. I'd agree with everything in 4StringTheorist's post.

I got the NJ4SE's. I like them enough to get another set for a passive Squier that is my next project.

I'd go for the signature series. I have a pair of those with the 3ZB and OMG they are killer in tone and volume!
