I didn't realize how little I knew about pickups until I started shopping for replacements for my Ibanez SR305M. It's a project bass; the pickups and electronics have to go.

Aguilar OBP-3 is already on order.

I have a pretty close string spacing, 17mm at the bridge.

measured over the pickups, spacing is:
Neck pickup:
G-D 15mm
D-A 15mm
A-E 15mm
E-B 15mm
total G-B 60mm

Bridge pickup:
G-D 15.5mm
D-A 15.5mm
A-E 16mm
E-B 16mm
total G-B 63mm

The existing routs are standard P2 size, 1.25" x 4.25".

I'd like to get 2 basic sounds out of this bass:
1. A nice punchy round tone for general purposes, example:
Cake - The Guitar Man
2. A sizzling growly tone for hard rock or metal like this:
Warwick Streamer LX 2010 SE

Now I know this cheap Ibanez is never going to sound like that multi-thousand dollar Warwick, but my question is, what are the best pickups I can put in there to go as far as I can in that direction?

I was all set to get Nordstrand Big Splits but found out they can't make them to my smaller string spacing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
