Nordy NP4 vs Lakland-Hanson "P"

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy folks,

I just recently purchased a Skyline Duck Dunn off a fellow TBer.
Original Lakland-Hansons were replaced with aftermarket P type pups, and while they get the job done I began to wonder. . .
So, just a couple of days ago, I picked up a set of NP4's.
After I got 'em, just for kicks, I called Lakland about their warranty on their pickups, and found out from Kirk, that they would replace the originals- I would just have to send them back to Lakland.
So after a few emails, I was able to get the original pups from the seller of the Dunn.
Herein lies the dilema:
Since I haven't installed the Nordy's, should I wait and install the Lakland- Hanson's instead?
For added confusions:
I've read that the Fralins (no longer offered) are the real hot ticket but for this bass. . .
I'm really leaning towards the NP4's, which I've heard nothing but good stuff about, but have also heard good stuff about the Hansons too.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

I have a Fralin in my Fender Precision, and I've tried the Duck Dunn with the Lakland-Hanson pickup. I think they sound very close. If you want an aggressive take on vintage tone, I think you'll dig the Lakland pickup.

No experience with Hanson but I'm in love with NP4 on my 78 P

I had a DD with Fralin and it was the best sounding P ive ever had.
I got a Fender P5 just before i sold the DD and there really was a difference. While the Fender sounds good and, to my ears, sounds like a P should sound the Fralin had a lot more punch to it and sounded a bit more modern, which i liked.

I have just put a NP5 in my DJ5 and while its in not in exactly the right place etc it sounds nowhere near as punchy as the Fralin, although its a great sounding pup in its own right of course.
No experience with Hanson though.

I would return the NP4 pickup and try the Lakland replacement p/u first. If that didn't make my ears happy I would order a Fralin replacement, which is a proven formula.
