Not happy w/ Warwick corvette 4 ST MEC PU recording direct into Presonus Firebox

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I have a 4 string Warwick Corvette Standard with passive MEC PU.

I like how it sounds when I run it through my Ampeg B100R Rocket combo but I hate how it sounds when I record direct into my Presonus Firebox preamps even I mess around with the Ampeg SVX plugin.

I was thinking of swapping out the pickups for a set of Nordstrand NJ4SV's. Will the change of pickups change the sound dramatically or will it be minor due to the wood (bubinga) of the bass? Or should I look into using a direct box? I tried the Sansamp and thought it sounded too sterile. I'm looking for a nice warm lowend old-school sound.

Thank you for your help!

FWIW:

sounds like to me you have a recording issue not a pup issue. What you describe is commonplace and posted so in the recording gear forum - search. Often there are adjustments that can be made. Don't know if the amp has a line out but that's the first thing I'd do if so or mic it. Some guys even have separate basses for live and recording. Some basses do well live and recorded to taste. Perhaps the Nords would do the trick but I'd mess some with the recording aspect first since you've already got the live sound you want - and it could be free not mention a learning experience.

+1 to what luknfur said.

If you like how the Ampeg B100R sounds, you should be recording 'that' sound, not going direct expecting it to sound like your B100R.
