OBP-3 eating batteries

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having trouble with my OBP-3 that its eating alot of batteries.. even when i have the bass laying down not beeing used, and no cables connected whatsoever.. I even have a active/passive switch installed, that is turned off when the bass aint beeing used.
Does anybody have any idea what can be wrong?

I'd consider having a tech (or yourself) look at the wiring to make sure things are correct. I once read an article (not on TB) about a guy who bought a Marcus Miller bass brand new & was having the same issue - eating batteries for no apparent reason even when not being used for a long period of time. In his case, he discovered the wiring was such that the preamp was in a constant state of "ON"...perhaps something like that is going on here too? Hope it helps.

yep, somehow the battery is always being drained. My guess is the jack ground and battery negative terminals need to be swapped. The jack battery negative terminal should only show continuity between the terminal solder point and the teminal/plug "tang" when the cord is plugged in.

On many flushmount jacks, the only way to determine which is which is with a meter.

Is the bass copper shielded? Any hot that touches that shield goes to ground.

Oh, well, pretty much have figured out what is wrong.. i do only have a MONO jack in my bass, and soldered all ground together.. it isnt supposed to be contact between the battery negative and all other ground wires until there is a "plug" in the bass.. so i guess i just have to buy a stereo jack and resolder that part.

By the way, i'm thinking about adding a tone pot to the bass, for when i run it in passive mode.. but i'm not shure where to wire it.. cus every way i can think of it is that it's always on, even when running active.. Can somebody help me with this then?

I can say that i have everything wired exactly in the same order as Aguilar suggests.

Yeh, that will do it.

The Aggie site has a by-pass diagram. Wire whatever you want in with the by-pass.

Yeah.. i've seen the one for OBP-1, and i know that it will be the same for OBP-3, but i cant understand where to wire it if i want it to be active only when i'm using passive mode (and want it turned off when i'm in active mode).
cus the way they seem to solve that one the OBP-1 wiring diagram is with a on/off switch, and if that one would be removed it would be active all the time... and i really don't want to add that switch.
So if anybody can point where to wire it in the OBP-3 "active/passive" diagram that would help alot

it's this OBP-1 diagram i'm talking about:

don't know, I have a hard copy of it but that was downloaded from the site so it should be there. It's not front page news like your above diagram, it's just mixed with one of the diagrams.
