OBP-3 Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
A few months ago I bought a Peavey Fury 6 and then added some new pickups and an OBP-3. I had them fitted by a highly recomended technician. My problem is that I get about 40 minutes of good play out of it and then it starts to sound as if the battery is flat, that horrible fuzzing sound fisrtly on the lower notes then over all the notes. There are two 9 volt batteries in it. I initailly thought it was a battery problem but the batteries had plenty of charge in them. I had the original pickup put back in and the problem still exists. I took it to another guitar tech and he said everything was installed correctly. I have checked it is definitely the OBP-3 as i have used the guitar with another amp to the same effect and have used another basses in the amps and the only consistant buzzing sound comes from the fury 6, after about 45 minutes play.
My two current theories are:
1. The OBP-3 is either faulty or it draws a heck of a lot of power from their batteries in a short time then the batteries need a good hour rest.
2. The two techs who installed it or double checked it for me have never put in a Aguilar OBP before and they have missed some important aspect of installing it.

Can anyone out there help me? Please!

They were 'emg style' refer to this thread from a few months ago :
Are these EMG Pickups... or not?
they were taken out and the originals put back in as part of finding out if the problem was with the pickups or the preamp. The difference in sound quality between the two types of pickups with the obp-3 in was negligable and also irrelvant to my queries here.

I guess no one has any ideas so i think I have a solution. I will sell the obp on ebay and try something else.

* A reasonable tech should be able to check the current consumption to see the pre is using a great deal more than it's specified to use.

* It may be that something is breaking down after a while, so any fault may not be measureable until the bass is starting to sound distorted.

* With the batteries connected, measuring the voltage from them before and after plugging in the jack would give you a clue, as there would be a significant change in voltage if a lot of current is being used.

* Certainly check the voltage when the distortion occurs to see if the batteries are getting exhausted.

* Also batteries can get warm if a lot is being sucked out of them.

* If a lot of current is being taken, you would need to confirm for sure where it's going. (A US player on tour, brought a bass to me with a similar problem, and it wasn't the pre. The jack, which was on the side of the bass, was going rusty [maybe too much beer passing through!] and that caused a partial short)

In conclusion, if a lot of current is being used by the pre, or even if it's not, but the sound is distorting, some excellent Aguilar customer service would appear to be in order, or from where ever you got your unit.

Wow!

Thank you so much John. You have certainly given me something to work with. I am now printing off your post and taking it along with my guitar back to the tech.

I really appreciate your help.
