OBP-3 or Pups?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, Just wanted some opinions on my options. I have recently bought a Peavey Fury 6 and I don't like the sound from the pups. I am looking into the option of putting in an Aguilar OB3 or getting new pups.
Can anyone tell me if the OB3 is likely to help solve my sound problem or should I be replacing the pups, and with what brands.

What about the sound do you dislike? Replacing the pickups might be a little to subtle for you to notice an improvement in tone. The OBP-3 will let you dial in some very full-sounding tones, if that's what you're looking for. It's a very bassy preamp.

The sound issue is that it lacks fulness in tone. There is a noticable difference in the c string it makes a terrible sound too dry, trebly and louder - I can't solve this problem with the guitar equalisation or the amps.
When I slide up the neck the tone is hollow.
I hope this makes sense I'm not too good at describing tones.

I'd say go with the OBP-3 then. It lets you really dial in the low end, without sounding to boomy. It should fill out your tone pretty well.

Welcome to TalkBass by the way!

Thanks very much Spencer.
I would love to hear if anyone else has a Peavey Fury 6 to find out what they have done with them.

Some comments on this thread on preamps versus pickups:

Pickup for an Ibanez SR?

Brian at www.bestbassgear.com is a great guy to work with. I have bought pickups and preamps from him and he is a sponser for talkbass.

Thanks Tim, after reading that thread I think I will try the OBP-3 and if that don't work try Bart pickups.
As for best bass gear, as good as they look, I'm in Australia and its always a hassle ordering online especially if you ever need to return stuff.
