hmmmmmmmmm.... want it to be funky tight rocky sounding metal sounding, low sounding, bright sounding, GREAT SOUDNING (w/ SGD pickups hopefully)

I always associate the OB-3 with uber hi fi... crystal top end (too much for me with that very high treble shelving point) and a very wide, clear low end... kind of more of a 'fusion/hi fi' pre to my ears.

Rock/Metal... not so much... maybe the OB-1 with the lower treble shelving point and the higher (I think bass center frequency point with wider Q).

The Bart pre would also be nice, as would the Sadowsky unit.

I know Flea uses OBP-1, so...he plays funk and rock and *insert new music style that rhcp made*

OBP-3 i say.

The treble is not that high, Musicman preamps are about the same frequency.

my favorite preamp for getting the sound you describe is called the "air amp"


...it's so small you can't even see it


...it can be placed ANYWHERE in your signal chain or even inside your bass


...it can be found on ANY bass that's listed as a "passive bass"
