P/J pickup circuit mod help.
I have a question about P/J pickup wiring mods and wondered if one of you guys can help?
I have a Lakland skyline P bass with jazz neck, a split P pickup in the Middle position and a Jazz pickup in the bridge position. I'm looking for a way to mod my bass, or some schematics to wire my bass in the following way...
2 way toggle switch
Position 1: series
Position 2: parallel
3 way toggle switch.
Position 1: only the P bass pickup, its volume pot and the tone pot is in the circuit.
Position 2: both pickups, both volume pots and the tone pot are in the circuit.
Position 3: only the Jazz bass pickup, its volume pot and the tone pot are in the circuit.
I've been looking through threads and I can't seem to find anything on here that gives this wiring configuration for a P/J pickup bass although it seems a fairly obvious thing to want to do. If there is a thread already could someone direct me to it?
I'm thinking that the 2 way series/parallel toggle switch might act as a kill switch when the 3 way selector has taken one of the pickups out of the circuit. Which might be fun effect to play with too.
The main reason is that my bass appears to be wired in parallel and there is a very scooped sound when both pickups are up full. The P pickup is deep and solid sounding and has an warm "under the mix" type sound and the jazz pickup is very bright and fairly thin sounding and gives the top two strings a guitar like quality. It's a very nice scooped sound, but I'd like more options to play with. I would like the p pickup to be able to have that nasty honky barky traditional P bass tone as well as the thick warm growly tone it is good at just now. The jazz pickup actually has a thin stringy, tinny music man quality to it but with a small bit of the jazz "thonk" and "snarl" to it. But the snarl sounds as if its being subdued a bit. I think allowing it to be the only pick up in the circuit would amplify the Jazz pickup qualities to it.
I would also like a soloed jazz bridge pickup as this seems to work nicely for playing crunchy distorted chords and cuts through nicely for playing heads etc... And be able to instantly switch it back to a thick focused P/J sound..
If anyone has any advice or wiring diagrams, and method for installing it would be greatly appreciated. I have built a Warmoth bass and I'm fairly experienced in doing my own tech and set-up on my basses, but I've haven't wired anything more than a simple P bass or Jazz bass design. None of it required drilling holes to fit pots or routing out a bigger space under the pick guard to fit extra components. I'm sure the space under the pickup in this bass will be slightly bigger already to accommodate the V/V/T circuit in there already. There is probably enough space under there to fit 2 mini toggle switches.
