Perplexed by Pedal Power Possibilities

Sign in to disble this ad
All alliteration aside, I recently obtained a Pedal Train Pedal Board (with Flight Case) and am slowly putting together a more stable rig. Frigging with all this crap at gigs has become a giant ass pain.

I have consulted the Pedaltrain website and they suggest the following power supplies:

The ONE-SPOT from Visual Sound
PEDAL POWER 2 from VooDoo Labs
The POWERALL from Godlyke
The DC-BRICK from Jim Dunlop
The VALVULATOR1 from VHT
The BIG JOHN from Carl Martin

What is your experience with any of these and are there others you might suggest?

Anyone who has used more than one - can you suggest why one might be better than the others?

I have a mix of AC (Digitech Whammy) and
DC powered pedals and some that require mini-power jacks
(1/8 inch male plugs - like the Proco Rat and TC Electronics Sustainer/EQ).

Thanks

I use the 1spot and I highly recommend it. Low price and it's just plain awesome.

Kinda depends on several factors ...

The DC brick and the one from Gator (the case people) are small and will give you a good steady reliable 9v power source. personally not a fan of the one-spot design for pro use and the VHT may be overkill the Carl Martin guys are known for top of the line gear.

But for me when the cash hits the counter, it would be the Voodoo Lab used by maybe more pro players than any other. The Pedal Power 2 plus is built like a tank, highly filtered and has multi power outlets. I use the SAG function (emulates a dying battery) on two of my effects. It also has an accessory plug for when you need an extra wall socket.

... Would be/is my 1st choice

I have a PedalTrain board too. I'm using the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power for two reasons; the PedalTrain came with brackets specifically made for the VLPP2 and because it can power any pedal on the market. Plus, its got this really cool feature where it will mimic a dying 9v battery, which makes the pedal sound a little different. Its expensive, but you will never have to worry about powering your pedals again. Plus, I was a little shocked when I realized the thing actually made a difference I could hear. All my pedals sound stronger now. You can call Voodoo Labs and they will make hook-ups to fit any pedal you need in case some of them use weird adapters.

another fan of the Pedal Power. I used one for a whie - probably will again as I seem to be acquiring pedals lately. One thing I liked was the ability to put two of the 9v outputs in series to power an 18v Trace Elliot pedal.

I have a one spot I use in my rehersal space. It's OK in there but - it won't do the 2 in series for 18v as above. It requires 'special' adaptor cables for some connections. If you take the time to secure it, so that it can't dislodged and you only run 9v boxes with standard barrel the 1 Spot works fine.

I like my pedal board to be a little more industrially bolted together though...

If it's only a couple of pedals (maybe up to 3 ?) then the Korg DT-10 or Boss TU-2 tuners will do what the 1 Spot does - just for fewer pedals.

I'm using the voodoo labs Pedal Power 2. Love it. Very quiet, have had no problems whatsoever.

I also run a mix of AC and DC pedals, and the PP2 handles it (the "line 6" outputs can be told to put out 9vAC). It'll also let you reverse polarity on some outputs. IIRC, it comes with 6 standard barrel connectors, one 1/8" plug, and one 9v battery topper. They also include a red color-coded cable to denote reversed battery polarity or AC output so you don't accidentally fry an effect.

Bonus points for the AC outlet on the back (I use mine for pedal board illumination).

I don't use the sag function, but it's nice to know it's there.

It's also built like a brick sh!thouse. I've mounted a boss RV3 on top of the PP2 to conserve space, still no issues in the 5 or so years I've had it.
