Anyone ever messed with phase switches or heard one? Either between two pickups or between the coils of a bucker? I think it would be an interesting thing if it souns ok.

It was fairly popular in the '70s and '80s. I had an old Kramer XL7 and a couple of other rock'n'roll basses from that era that had a phase switch. The sound is generally thinner and "weird", so most people don't like it. But if you dig surf, rockabilly, dragster, garage rock etc. that out-of-phase sound is a very cool fit for those styles. One of my current basses has a phase switch, and while I wouldn't use it most of the time, it's very cool to have that unique tone available when I want it.

I have a Westone Thunder III (Issue 2) that has phase on the push/pull Volume control.

I find the Out-Of-Phase much more 'useable' on a bass than on guitar.

Pulling the switch plus adding a bit of bass boost makes for a very punchy tone.

The controls on the above are, from nearest the strings:

Vol push/pull phase
Passive treble roll-off
Active tone - bass boost anti-clockwise from detente, mids boost clockwise
Three position tone selector.

Top mini-switch is parallel/serial on both pickups (neck is a P in a rectangular shell, bridge is a 2 spool humbucker)

Bottom mini is active/passive.

18 volt electrics.

Also beautifully built - I think it's an '86.

Tried it once, hated it, had it all pulled out as soon as I could afford it.

I'm assuming all of these are based off phase switches between two separate pickups. Correct?

Yes, I do like those strange unorthodox sounds. So I might put one in on a push-pull on my volume control of my SR406.

But I know that i saw a guitarist that did a phase switch between the two coils of one pickup and it gets an even thinner wirder sound because of the small distance. Any experience there? Might be interesting in a bass im considering building.
