Which to pick!? Many Opinions needed!!

So, as always I'm conflicted between two things. I am working on building a bass and I was set on getting Villex pickups but I had a lousy interaction with Bill Villex himself, so now I'm trying to find some pickups that are going to have a great bottom end growl and that sharp high tone. I've always used stock pickups but with electric guitars I've always loved the sound of EMG's. Can anyone recommend some great pickups in a $80-$180 price range?

Do you have any style of pickup in mind? Jazz, Split-coil, Soapbar, etc?

Yeah it's for a P bass, I'm trying to fix up an old 1988 Peavy P-bass. I also don't know anything about switching out passive pickups with active ones, I don't really have room for a battery slot. That's why I wanted the villex pickups because they sound active and are passive
