On my JJ, the front PU is about an inch rearwards... May be better to start with a 51 type 5 string add a rear J pick up..
Issue being I like the punch of the single coil PU, and have not bee able to get it out of the J PU I have tried. Maybe I haven't found the right PU yet, but ...

The single-coil Precision pickup is vastly different from other Fender (and most Fender-style) pickups. Like other Fender PUPs it has a coil wrapped around individual magnets. But it has only ONE pole for each string. That's a huge part I believe of the characteristic sound of those instruments. The attack in fact is why Leo Fender designed the double-pole pickups he used on the second-generation Precision and the Jazz Bass.

I played a lot of funk and old soul on it, especially Tower of Power material, and that thing punched through like a machine gun - spit out those rapid 16th nice and separated, clean and clear. That's what I'm trying to get.
I understand the difference between the two types of Pick ups, and why Leo went to a dual pole PU, I gather, too much punch for his amps.
I wish I could find a 5 str wide J type PU with that much punch..
