pick up and preamp compatibility

Here is a pick up 101 question (forgive me I am new to all this). I want to change a guild starfire bass with a passive system that has dark star pickups (which I want to try and keep) and add an onboard preamp to give it more tonal variation. So my question is ... can I add active electronics to a passive pickup (are they compatable).... or do I need active pickups and electronics?

As long as the preamp's input impedance is above 1M Ohms, that's fine.

Active pickups aren't often used with preamps, btw.
