Pickup based compression

Being using the seymour hot stack jazz that was put into my modded ATK for a while now, and I can't help but think it's not really that hot for one (the reviews said it wouldn't be and I'm not too bothered about that) but also with such a name I imagined it'd be quite open sounding, of which it isn't. It sounds pretty decent when raised near the strings, but as with alot of things, what sounds nice and open and clear can turn into mud very quickly when you put a heavy signal into it.

I dunno if there are several wiring options for this pickup cos I wasn't the one that installed it, but I do know that the thing distorted like hell when I first got it back, and the guy put a capacitor (at least I seem to remember that's what he said) in the circuit and that's sorted it out.

Perhaps this just isn't the right pickup for me, it's not too heavier compression to be honest and I do play pretty hard, but I'm kinda astounded given that on the site it's recommended as a pickup suitable for heavy rock and metal, although I guess that kinda grind you get from certain kinds of compression is sought after alot of the time in heavy music.
