I want a nice smooth low mids sound that will be mellow and growl when I dig in. If you vote please post specific model suggestions Thanks

Not tried the old SC Fender style, so I voted for the Strat type.

Try a Dimarzio fast track 1, Protrack, Duncan Collrails or EMG FT

I've tried a few Strat pickups in basses. If I were you I'd find a Fender Tex-Mex pickup on ebay. I think they're wound with 43 on the one-piece plastic bobbins. Make sure it's a one-piece bobbin. Also make sure it has alnico rods instead of a ceramic magnet glued on the bottom. Look for one in the 6-7K range. If you're careful you can remove the magnets without screwing up the coil, glue in pieces of 3/16" wooden dowel to fill the holes where the magnets were, redrill (preferrably on a drill press) four 3/16" holes so they'll be under your strings. Put four magnets in the new holes making sure they all have the same polarity, that is ALL have north OR south pointing up. AllParts has no-hole pickup covers in black and white. You can let it eat, or drill the covers for the four magnets.

If you like that, but want more, I'd suggest a 50's-60's DeArmond gold or silver foil by the neck - they work well together, and the DeArmond alone by the neck will surprise you in a good way. The DeArmond won't need any mods because the coil is wrapped around a bar magnet. Note: if you think you might go that route make your Strat pickup with the magnets having north pointing up since the DeArmond will likely be south.

Man, that sounds elaborate. Just buy a SCPB (Tele bass) sized pickup!

You can buy them direct from Larry Pollack, the owner, designer, and maker himself. Call the number on the website, if he doesn't answer leave a message and he'll call you back.
Also, ask some questions and you'll get a pickup education
from a very knowledgeable guy..
