Pickup Buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
Just installed some Dimarzio Model J using the provided instructions for series humbucking (red and green connected, black and white joined and taped). There's no push pull pot and the bass is an American Standard Jazz - so the original wiring was as per the instructions given on the Fender page.

When I touch the exposed poles (but make no contact with anything else) on the bass side of both pickups, they're noticeably buzzy - on the treble side, hardly anything at all.

I've checked the grounds - they seem to be ok.

Is this normal or did I miss something somewhere?

Ta.

I'm pretty sure the pole pieces are not grounded on those pickups. That's why you get the buzz.

You can try and stick some copper foil tape with conductive adhesive on the bottom, letting it touch all the pole pieces where they pass through the keeper bars, and solder a ground wire to that foil tape.

Cheers - if it's a 'design feature' and not down to anything i've done, I'll learn to live with it.

Just didn't understand why the poles under the E and A on both pups make noise and those under the D and G are much quieter in comparison. Would expect em all to be the same.

Thanks again.
