Pickup change in Musicman?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a 4-string stingray with a maple neck and the stock 2 double humbucker configuration. I LOVE the tone I get out of the bridge pickup, but I can't stand the tone I get out of the neck one- too twangy. I never use it.

I want a fatter, warmer tone out of the neck (warm but still precise and responsive)- something closer to a ESP or Spector- but nobody I've talked to has ever changed the pickups in a musicman. I was thinking about an EMG, but which? Has anybody done this? Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks! I apologise if this info is somewhere else on the forum and I missed it.

The neck pickup may be too high. You should have 6/32" (4.76mm) between the bottom of the strings and the plastic pickup cover.

The FAQ at http://www.music-man.com has the setup specs; it may be worth checking them.

EB owners don't generally switch pickups; some have used Seymour Duncans, but most tend to stick with the originals.

I'm getting used to the Sterling 4 single H now, and I have a Stingray H on the way. Takes a bit of finer technique for me to avoid buzzing on the frets.

I'd leave it alone. You'll kill the resale value if you change pickups. Most folks that want MM basses like them unaltered. If you want the tone of a Spector, then get a Spector. If you do swap them out, hang on to the original pups,as EB does not sell pickups.
