Pickup compatibility issue

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Yamaha BB414. There are 2 pickups, 1 P & 1 jazz (not sure but close to the bridge). There is a toggle switch for me to select P pickup, both or the bridge. I changed the P pickup to Duncan hot P pickup. Now, it sounds ok for selecting either the P or the bridge pickup, but sound strange for select both pickup.

Not sure what the issue is...?? How can I solve the problem ?

I am wondering whether I need to change the bridge pickup also but I don't find a pickup that is able to fit to the bridge one without mod on the body....

When you say "strange" do you mean thin/quiet/no bottom?.

If yes, then you have wired the pickups "out of phase". Switch the hot and ground wires from either pickup and that should cure it.

Thanks for your advice, Peter !! Yes, sound from both pickup becomes thin...no bottom...Will try to see if switch the hot & ground wire will help...

I just thought that the bridge pickup is ceramic one (according to Yamaha web), that is not compaitable with the Duncan Hot P pickup...any possibility on this ?

Doubt it. Your pups are probably out of phase like he suggested.
