Pickup cover: Humbucking Double-Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys.

I'm in need of a certain pickup cover. It's for a Double-jazz pickup found in Fender P-bass Deluxes.

I really have no need for the magnet itself, only the cover...
I've searched everywhere, and here's what I've found out:

- Warmoth doesn't have them
- No one on Ebay has them currently
- Darrenriley.com has the pickup(!), but says he can't sell the cover by itself.
- Delano has something similar, but is basically two separate pickups with the nobs cut off. Looks ugly. I've emailed them about a "custom pickup cover," but have yet to receive a reply
- Warwick's MEC is the same as Delano, except there's another coil in between the two separate coils. Looks worse.
- Curtis Novak sells the magnets only, and does not include the cover
- Rio Grande has a humbucker, but is shaped like a g**tar pickup
- Nordstrand's double-coil is not the size I need
- Schaller apparently used to make a pickup like this, but not anymore

So far, my best option seems to be to get the Fender pickup for $50 and chuck the magnet itself. ouch...

I was in the exact same boat as you when i had Curtis Novak build me a pickup like that.
I searched high and low and could not find a cover for him to put the pickup into but came up with nothing. (I saw that eBay link, but they wouldn't sell just the cover so i didn't want to pay that much for it. I also don't like that super cheap matte plastic appearance.)

The solution we came up with was to take two Jazz bass pickup covers and cut out the mounting "nubs" to make the edge flat, then glue them together.

I would advise you to do the same, but are the coils on your pickup attached together, or seperate?
You may have to do a bit of modification to get it to fit right.

Here is the makeshift cover on my pickup:

Ha, wow 20 bucks for a pickup cover isn't bad at all, considering I could even use the magnets later for a project.

Ha, while searching I actually ran across one of your threads on this very subject. That looks like a really simple and great idea.

Unfortunately, it seems that I've been an idiot, thinking that I needed exactly the double-width of a J pup. I actually need it to be slimmer (only 0.4 inch wider than a regular J), so a humbucker would require more routing on the top.

Here's a mockup of what I have planned:These will be black wooden pickup covers, with the exact dimensions that I need.

I may just go with the first one.
