Pickup Covers?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play an Ibanez SRX-505 and when I play the on any string other then the B I usually use the B as a thumb rest. The problem is that I usually pluck very hard and when I do I end up touching the B to the Magnet and it makes a loud popping sound. To remedy this do you think It would affect the tone or volume of the the bass if I made a wooden pickup cover for the top of the Pups? I was thinking just a thin wood veneer that I could stain black and stick on top.

Good idea or no?

Im sure you can just either lower the pickup on that side or raise the string via the bridge saddles. Or you could also just pluck lighter.

I did think of all of those options, but I love everything about the action and how it sounds with my playing style. Those are all going to be my last resorts if the pickup cover is going to be a bad idea. It really wont be any problem for me to make one, I already have the spare wood and stain.

Maybe i'll just tape a thin strip of wood and test it out my self. That should answer my question, But everyone feel free to chime in with anyother answers.

Never tried it, but I would think that a thin layer of wood or plastic shouldn't interfere with the magnetic field at all. Like you said, try taping a piece to your pickup and see what happens. It couldn't hurt to try.
