which pickup to get?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm looking to upgrade the pickup on my bass its just a regular p bass style pickup but I'm not sure what to get as far as brands go. I've heard that EMG's, Dimarzio's and seymour duncans were good. But being new to this I don't quite know the difference between them. I was wondering what you guys thought? By the way I play a little bit of everything so versatility would be ideal for me.

Most today's pickups are good, but not necessarily good for you...

If you provide a soundclip or youtube video with a tone goal we will be happy to point you to some direction...

EMG's specialize in Active circuitry. The pickup is lower output, so it needs a preamp. They do do passive, and they too are good.

Id probably go for Seymours quarter pound precision pickup.

What is it you don't like about your current pickups? That has a bit to do with new pickup selection, there are tons of options. Almost all pickup manufactures have 2 or 3 stages of pickups ranging in vintage and mellow to hot and punchy. You could potentally spend over 200 bucks for set of P's so do some research. Most pickups output is measured with a number to rate resistance, the higher the number, the higher the output in most cases. Listen to sound clips, compare and go from there.
There is no "wrong" pickup, it's all about what YOU like.

Thanks for all the advice guys,
But my only problem is that there's not a specific tone I'm looking for. Which do you think are the most versatile?

I like dimarzio and emg best myself. But then I use roundwounds and prefer deep dark articulate agressive tone that also has plenty of treble top available. Seymours are good, but overly bright to me.

You need to make your own decision on this one. Frankly, I like the Fender stocks or Duncan Antiquity IIs, but here are bunch of additional flavors, Thank you Dan Atkinson for the great PUP demo.
