How high should the pickups be on my active bass with EMG pickups?

i had them low and it was quiet

now i have them very high and its is distorting.

FWIW:

most guys stick pups at about 1/8" from bottom of the strings which seems is like a nickel thickness. E's typically further and progressively closer to G as the guages alter the output. Anyway, it's a personal preference thing as it alters output, tone, and balance.

I've never had issue with active EMG's being too close. The EMG site basically states you can set them as high as you want. They're low impedance so I guess not as sensitive to distorting. But what is is and that's what you have to deal with.

Pup height adjustment is part of the install process and I start pups as high as I feel comfortable with them being and drop them till the tone lacks noticeably then raise them back up a bit. Output I don't consider other than it meshing with the tone cause output I can get from the amp.

I actually don't like active PU's too close to the strings. I just don't like dealing with too much output, clipping, etc. I back mine off a bit.
