Pickup Info.....?

I'm gonna have to be perfectly honest here and say i don't know a whole lot in relation to how pickups interact with tone.

I've always searched for tone with a nice upper mid zing and warm low end (im not a fan of the clicks and noise of trebs), but my main bass, a schecter stiletto extreme can really only handle the warm part and treble. However my old bass, an SX cobra can really get a nice bity/stingy (for loss of better words) using the same pedal/amp eq settings. The Cobra (an imitation J-bass) uses two single coils and is passive, the schecter is a double soapbar humbucker and is active.

Is it the single coils that give the bitier tone or is the fact that my other bass is active or is the quality of schecters pickups just questionable. Would i be better off with a HS rather then HH configuration?

Thanks
