Pickup for Mbira/Kalimba

I've built one myself, but I was wondering how to make it electric... would you use a normal (wire wound around magnets) pickup? Or would it be something like a microphone that picks up the sounds inside the mbira.

What would you do? What are my options?

FWIW:

not very often I see an original post but I think you may have a first here.

Only ones I've seen were little lap top deals and brighter than a dulcimer - kind of cool for that caribbean vibe.

I'd use whatever other people have whatever that may be. A net search should turn up something. Probably something along the lines of mic'd acoustic guitar would be my guess.

I would be suprised if anyones used a guitar-like mag pup on one. Seems they have like little tangs you just flip as opposed to strings that mags are designed for.

Your eKalimba guy uses just a simple piezo element on the inside attached to a jack:

Ha, I guess I should have looked a little better.

Perfect, thanks.

Hi:

My old band mate Mark Holdaway is one of a few
gifted experts in kalimbas and is a Hugh Tracey distributor

www.kalimbamagic.com

He sells a model with a piezo and 1/4" jack that is
very popular.

You should email him as I doubt there is a more knowledgable
source on the planet than Mark

Oh man, I've been on that site quite a few times. Maybe I'll toss him an email, that's cool that you know him.

I'm wondering now, what is a cheap/easy piezo and 1/4 jack setup? Under 20 bucks? I'd like to keep it cheeeep.

Sent him an email, mainly concerning the kalimba's keys, I made my own out of umbrella spokes, but they are subpar.
