Pickup n00b, I need help!

Hello all, Ive got a question regaurding what I might be able to achieve from changing pickups. I own a '94 SR(800?) Ibanez and I find that while I enjoy its tone, it comes off kind of weak in the mids sometimes and lacks growl, which I really want. I was wondering if new pickups could cure this maybe? I really would hate to sell this bass, I enjoy how it feels and my hands have become accustomed to it over the past year or so. So if a new set of pickups can indeed fix this, what kinds should I look around for? Also, is it difficult to change them by yourself? Keep in mind I have NEVER done ANY electronic work past installing a CD player in a car. Im looking forward to your responses.

Thanks for reading,

RCM

IME, a pickup & possibly pre swap will get you what you're looking for.
check out Best Bass Gears site,, it's actually stickied at the top of this forum, & check out pickups that are the same size as what you have & read about the characteristics of different pickups.
you can also go to Harmony Central & check out their pickup user reviews,, it may give you a better idea of the exact pickup you seek,, that fits,
Good Luck
