Pickup Noise

Sign in to disble this ad
Any reason why I am getting noise from my p bass. I am using Seymour Duncan SPB 2 pick ups. This only happens when I move my hand completely away from the strings and is worse the more treble that is applied.

It is slightly annoying although the sound of these pickups and the guitar is great when played as the noise is not noticeable then.

This does not happen when I use my Fender Jazz.

Sounds like a ground problem. I haven't had a chance to look under the hood of my P-bass V (just got it on Wednesday), but my Jazz V has a cavity ground and a bridge ground. Might want to take a look, maybe one of your wires came loose?

There is no circuit malfunction. It's the nature of the beast. Dry air, standing on a rug, polarity issues with your house electric will cause some pickups to buzz in the house. You didnt mention if you had done work on the bass or someone else has. Either way this is not an uncomon problem with single coil pups.

It's a 90's model Fender Squire Precision MIJ, I have had the pickups replaced and also had a Leo Quan bridge fitted. This work was done some time ago and have not noticed this until recently.

I have a gig tomorrow and see how it sounds then.

Thats the best way to do it. Some enviornments are unfriendly to some gear.

I did have a bass that did that with some florescent lights, problem solved by some copper shielding in the pickup cavities. Sounds like it's not a grounding problem, maybe that'll help?

Shielding, grounding, malevolent spirits or some combination of the above.

Single coils buzz, you could try a reverse coil.
