Pickup options for custom bass creation; help please!

Yo.

I'm currently looking to get a custom bass done by a luthier in town, and I'm looking for a certain sound.

I want to get a really low, very funky sound with no crunchiness in the tone. I want something that can do this, but still pick up the highs really well, something that is good for both but favors a really bass heavy tone; if this made any sense at all.

Perhaps this question goes as far as wood combination and pickups; any suggestions?

Look at the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum and read all the pickup comparison threads and maybe even listen to the mp3's (I don't find them much help myself when trying to choose). They may not give you an exact answer, which is really impossible as we can't know the sound in your head, but will give you plenty to reflect on and may help narrow down choices. Pickup shape will also determine options to some extent as some moel, and consequently tones, aren't available in all shell shapes.
