-Ibanez STD-M this pickup is in the paul gray signature bass

-Ibanez CAP Double Humbucker this pickup is in the ATK

please help me out, pickups have always confused me. Thank you!

Most pickups are passive, the active element usually comes form the use of a pre amp.

Both os those are passive form what i can tell.

If you have access to the basses in question, look at the wiring.
Actives will have a connection to the positive terminal of the battery. Passives will not.

No, they will both be Passive pickups coupled with an Active preamp, i havent seen many (If any) Ibanez's using active pickups.

Is this pickup passive or active?

I recently worked on an Ibanez ATK-305. Active bass.

I haven't had hands on a Paul Gray Signature bass yet, but from the description on Ibanez's website my first guess would be passive.

They had a few back in the 80s. My '87 SR-885LE had Ibanez "Regulated Lo-Z" active pickups. After that they had another model of active pickup, and then seemed to dropped the idea.

They sounded nice, but were noisy.
