Pickup placement question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a couple questions for you smart people...

I got a cheap Epiphone EBO for the express purpose of being my first frankenstein project... I have a couple cheap humbuckers to stick in it that I yanked out of a cheap chinese bass I upgraded. My question:

Can I put two humbuckers right next to each other? Will the interfere or something? I have seen other pickups placed tight beside each other.

Oh, and these are chrome pickups. Would it decrease performance (not that they are great) if I painted them?

Thanks
IS

Aside from tonal differences from the pickups being placed in weird positions, the only thing that i can think of to be concerned with would be that you might get alot of string pull with too many coils.

I dont see how painting a cover would change anything...

Thanksfor the reply... This bass is a big experinment for me... Gonna be played primarily at ball games with my band kids at school... And I am gonna put some artwork on it that will fit better if i put the pups together... Normally I would not sacrifice the pup placement for looks, but this is a cheap goofball project. So I will give it a try.

painting shouldn't be a problem, it nice to place your pick up where the harmonics are though. I have heard players complain about lack of sustain because of too much magnetic pull on the strings. If its a project, then go for it, you can always undo what you did.

Yeah... I have all the skills of a blindfolded kid taking apart a pinata... But my school's mascot is the Vikings, so imagine the SG body as a viking face with hons at top and screaming bearded face at the bottom... the big stock pup will be in the helmet, the pups I am adding in the big screaming mouth... If it totally stinks, I have lost little and can change it later... Thanks for the input, Todd...
