Pickup/Preamp Advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm building a bass that will utilize three pickups. One will be piezo, one will be a high output tele bridge pickup, and one will be... Well, I dunno. That's where I need advice. It's gonna be the primary pickup, and I'd like to go for a Musicman kind of sound. Here's the real kicker. This bass will be a six string, EADGBE (Bass VI style), with conventional guitar string spacing. So something with bar magnets would be ideal. I've heard the Bartolinis and EMGs use bar magnets, but I'm worried they might not cover the upper range of the instrument well. I'm almost tempted to go with a regular guitar humbucker.

And then there's the preamp. Do you have any idea what might fit the bill? Piezos and mags with Bass VI range? I'm thinking I'll just have to build a preamp, which is fine. But I wondered if anyone might have any ideas.

I have a little time to research and work it all out, but the build is coming along more quickly than I expected. So I guess I ought to get to work.

Thanks.
