Pickup/Preamp suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Pondering a full re-do of the electronics on my Ibby SR-406. Wondering about suggestions from the group.

Tone-wise, I really like Stingrays. And a nice angry jazz bass sound.

Thinking possibly about EMG or Nordstrand.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

What are the sizes of the current pickups, and are you looking for direct replacements only?

Good to see ya, Matt.

i don't know, and i'm ok with doing a little carpentry.

right now, AFAIK, it's wearing standard Ibanez Soapbars.

I'd start with swapping out the preamp. The stock Ibanez pickups aren't that bad, but their preamps tend to be horrible.

Probably not a bad suggestion. For preamps, I really like the Nordstrand 3-band preamp in my Hanewinckel so far.

honestly, i'm definitly more of a simple guy where my bass is concerned. i don't like passive, but i also don't want a ton of knobs... pondering the basic aguilar pre...

The Nordy preamp comes in many varieties. It's also available as a 2-band pre. Check Best Bass Gear for some options. IMO, when the pre is set flat, it really doesn't change the tone of the passive pickups. I also like the frequencies on the Nordy pre.
