Pickup/Preamp suggestions wanted - 4 knob 18V J-bass
I've got a parts J that needs electronics. I'm wanting it to be pretty much a J tonewise, but the body already has a dual battery box and side jack, so I figure I might as well use them. It's an Alder body and will get a Maple/Rosewood AM Special P-bass neck. Bridge is TBD, probably either vintage or medium beefy like a Gotoh 201.
I'm thinking maybe Fender pickups and an Aguilar? Set up as Vol/Blend/Mid/Stacked T/B
I absolutely hate Vol/Vol setups so the only rule is I want a blend knob. Would like it to have an optional passive mode if possible.
On J basses, I kinda like EMG's more than most other pickups. On my Aerodyne I have the PJX set. They also sound killer with Aguilar preamps.
I'd do 2x EMG JVX or JX depending on what kind of voicing (and aesthetics) you want. EMG ABCX blend, Aguilar OBP-3 with the bass/treble stacked.
EMG's will sound great at 18V, and I know the Aguilar loves running at 18V as well.
Otherwise, I'd look at Aguilar, Seymour Duncan, or Delano pickups.
EMG's with a BTS system. EMG doesn't do the active/passive thing though. You could have a tech install a switch.
Audere preamp is the way to go.
Lots of pickup choices. DiMarzio Area J's are some of my favorites...all the J sound with zero noise.
I'd get an Aguilar combo - pickups + preamp.
+1 for the EMG pickups. Also, +1 for the Aguilar preamp.
