Pickup problem - no volume

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a old Hofner violin bass (believed built around 1965 but how can I know for sure? - it has the second-generation "bar" type pickups). The electricals have become defective; I can barely hear any sound from the instrument, even through a 40-Watt practise Amp on full volume. Could this be a defective pre-amp; I believe the Hofner has one built-in. Is it fixable by self (I'm a total NOVICE but am a fast learner) or should I take it to a pro? How much money are we talking about? I live in S. Carolina.
