pickup questions ive had in my head

Sign in to disble this ad
so iam makeing a seven string bass and iam down two buying pickups. the cheapist i was able to find them was for around 200 dollars for one.
if u know a cheaper pickups thats good give me a link.

now to my questions. i was thinking i could buy a 5 string j pickp set and buy a p pickup. could you take the p pickup apart and wire one half of the p with one of the j's to make a seven string pick up.

my next idea would be this. take 2 ;4 string j pickups and wire them togarther like a p pickup is . only problem one string whould go over a coil on each pickup. sorry if this doesnt make sense.

The first problem I see would be that the half of the P pickup would not match the J in terms of output or sound character. So there'd be a drastic difference between the strings covered by each pickup.

Your second idea also may give you output problems where the pickups overlap. If you already have some cheap pickups and a bass you can afford to ruin you may want to experiment.

If you want a good sounding professional looking job though, I think you'll have to bite the bullet and buy pickups made for a seven string bass. Or go all out and do some studying and wind your own pickups.

I'd say, wind your own and make wood covers to match the bass!

If you can provide the specs to a pickup maker I'm sure you could have some made for less than $200 each. A lot less I bet.

I was going to do that and I had decided to use 2 p-bass pickups to make a long extended P pickup. Make sense?

Aero makes great pickups. I know Stambaugh uses Aero pickups. There is also Bartolini, EMG, DiMarzio, BassLines (Duncan), Lindy Fralin, Kent Lawrence
