I have an ESP B-254 that had lame EMG-HZ's in it with an equally lame preamp. This thing sounded like absolute CRAP. I also have a lot of spare parts around. Pots, pickups, etc. The pickups I had lying around happened to be a '51 P Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder pickup [with wire cut a LOT to short on it] and a little Duncan Designed jazz pickup I pulled out of my Squier VM Fretless Jazz [so I could install DiMarizio Ultra Jazzes]. I just had to pick up some wire, solder, and a soldering gun.
So I got to work and ripped all the guts out of my ESP. I found some pots that were once in a Samick Custom bass I have [long since swapped for a set of EMG jazz pickups]. I had to heat up all of the solder on those pots in order to get everything clean and get all the old wires and solder off.
Pots were good to go.
So I began to wire everything up like it was supposed to be by looking at a Standard Jazz pickup set wiring diagram on the seymour duncan website. Wired the pots, got the hots and grounds right, and had to solder some wire to the bottom of that quarter pounder.
Soldering is kinda frustrating. But at least I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Everything was connected [QP in the neck position and jazz in the neck] and I was ready to go. I couldn't wait to string up my baby and play it. And man this thing sounds AWESOME. EVEN WITH THE EQ FLAT!! [I'll post sound clips as soon as I find the stuff I need to record onto my computer]
The only problem is I've got two open holes on the body. So I've been looking around here for ideas and I think I'm gonna put a on/off killswitch on it and a momentary killswitch [Morello. Buckethead].
I just need to do some modifications and everything will be perfect. Man this was a great idea.
