Pickup routing question

Sign in to disble this ad
I am replacing the pickups in my Bass Company TBC JT-400-JJ (Jazz bass). I like the sound, but the stock set up is active (9v preamp) and I prefer passive. So, I figured while I am taking out the preamp, why not just replace the pickups for a little extra experimentation.

Why is everything harder that it should be?

The conundrum here is the pickup routes. The good news is that the new pickups fit just as well as the old ones (new ones are Stan Hinsley Hot J's). The Bad news is that both set of pickups fit so snugly that there is no room for any additional sheilding, which I think it needs (I am using Stewmac shieding paint).

My question is, how tight should the pickup route be? I am going to use a dremel tool with a sanding bit to widen the routes ever so slightly. I just want to know how tight a normal pickup rout is.

Your thoughts?

Are the new pups so noisy that you think you need to shield the pup cavities?

None of mine have ever needed it...your pup should be wax dipped, which helps against noise.

I would try without sanding and shield paint....you may find you don't need it at all..

Just my thoughts
