FWIW:
google audere preamps and go the FAQ section for Pickup Shielding or something like that.
I was so impressed I shielded one for kicks and grins. Unfortunately it was anything but (not a fun project) yet it did significantly reduce hum when not touching strings, same amount when touching - which David said was normal.
If I'd used a pup that had identical bobbins like in his pic, I'd have just shielded the pup and ditched messing with the cover. Would have been a lot easier, faster, and cleaner job. But since I shielded the cover, I can swap it to different pups so it could save me from additonal shielding in the long run.
