I have some custom pickups and one individual who is suppose to be knowledgeable about pickups, claims that he can't tell what the solder points are, especially since the pickups are custom. He also claims that he's not even sure how he would find out.
Is it really that hard to tell where the solder points are?
I know it's not hard at all. And the guy has inquired three different times about wanting the pickups and he has flaked out each time. |

Also, even if the flatwork isn't visible (i.e. the whole thing is coated in epoxy) the solder points should be visible.
The guy's flaked out three times, I'd say he's out.

Exactly. I told him that since he claims to know about these things that finding(and recognizing) the solder points is really elementary. Quote:

No they are for sale. And have been for a few months and each time he tells me that he wants them and we agreed on a trade and each time after we agreed he would disappear. And each time flake out. So the last time, a few weeks ago he said that he was serious and ready to do the trade if I was still interested. I agreed again and then he came up with the solder point excuse. I asked him to stop contacting me. |

| | ~ | | | | | Is this a kid? Sounds like a kid trying to be "friends" with a pro, but has no money or anything to really trade, and doesn't want to lose respect.
If it's an adult, it sounds like he has some issues.
Potential stalker issues.

Potential stalker issues. | I'm not sure how old he is. The first time he flaked out, I was like ok. The the same pattern the second time. And when he inquiered the third time I knew what to exspect.
I don't have to sell the pickups at all. I was even willing to trade him for some thing of less value in an attempt to help him get the pickups that he keep saying that he really really want but can't afford.
What I was willing to trade for, I could get from the company that makes it(I'm an endorser) |

That's purely a guess though. An ohmmeter would tell us pretty quickly where the coil is connected.
As for which one is the start of the coil and which is the finish, I'm sure there's a scientific way to tell. However if you choose one as the positive and retain that convention, then the pickups should always be in phase (and your ears will tell you when they're not which is a quick fix).
Here's the photo:
