Pickup spacing troubles.

I picked up an eastwood "mosrite" style pickup off of ebay and in hopes of installing it on my MIM jazz bass. no problem getting it to fit, the MIM's have that ghastly "swimming pool" route for the neck pickup.

Here's the problem: The pickup has very narrow pole spacing.

I took the thing apart and the bar magnet stuck to the bottom is quite a bit longer than the actual pole spacing.

Is it at all possible to increase the spacing? I've got an allparts mudbucker that has a long blade running through the two bobbins and the plate with the pole screws on it is a lot wider than the blade itself.

maybe some kind of... extention? what about just flipping it over and putting the magnet on top? I plan to build a new cover for it, so looks don't matter.

You can't just move polepieces without rebuilding the entire pickup. Check out some threads about DIY pickups... it's not a job for the faint of heart.

Do you want the poles moved because they don't look good under the strings? Is there a problem with them picking up sound evenly from string to string?

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it occurs to me that a thin piece of iron laid across the tops of the poles would hold make a decent bar magnet and give you even response across the strings.

yeah, thats what i was thinking. I'm going to make a solid cover for it, so looks don't matter.

I'm not planning on converting it to a blade style pickup... in that case i might as well start from scratch. the iron bar idea you have is what i'm thinking, too. not sure if it would do anything though.

Its for string response. the volume on my E string is like half that of the other 3 strings. also, the E is the only one that doesn't line up with a pole piece.
