what if someone made a pickup that just ran the entire length of the space that pickups usually go in?

It would probably be quite heavy. Oh and I bet that having that much area of the string exposed to a magnetic field would kill the sound.

That's the opposite.
No pickups at at in the space between the neck heel and bridge.
