Pickup suggestion for crappy bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there. I ahve an old Peavy Diamond bass that I got for $50. It works fine for recording ideas but sounds a bit lifeless. I am not a bass player but use it for recording etc. It has a pickup configuration with the 2 small domino sized pickup that are offset from each other. Not sure what this is called... sorry.

Anyway, I am looking for a suggestion for a replacement pickup that is affordable and can improve the sound. I record mostly loud rock stuff but not always... I generally like a sort of growly sound. a bit aggressive sounding I guess.

I apologize if this post is naive. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!!!

Chances are that it's a "P" pickup, based on the pickups found on Fender Precision basses.

You might try this which is an overwound very 'hot' pickup.

A more vintage version of that can be found here.

Also, check the classifieds here on TB. Lots of used pickups come up for sale, often for a very reasonable price.
