Pickup Suggestion for MTD Kingston

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an MTD Kingston 5-string, it's a really comfortable bass for me, but to me it sounds a bit sterile, little too hi-fi. I'm looking for a pickup that'll get a warmer sound, I'd like to keep it passive too. Thanks.

What kind of tone are you looking for? That is the main question. If you are looking for full and balaced sound, I'd suggest Villex pickups (very versatile too).

I'm curious about the same thing. I believe I've got it narrowed down to a Nordstrand MM5.2 or a Seymore Duncan Basslines MM. I wish someone with experience with those two could give us some input.

What I've been really looking for is an old-school rock tone, warm, a little dark, but I don't really have the cash to buy a bass that would be more appropriate, so a new pickup is a more cost effective option.

I think the Bartolini MM should drop in. This should help.

IMHO the Villex gives you that old school tone and much more. I will be back next week so I will try to send you samples

In my 5594 lakland I've had the standard barts, a nord 5.2 and a duncan. The duncan is the most scooped sounding of the three with agressive highs. The nord sounds very open with nice highs and punchy midrange. Of the three if you are looking for warm and dark (and BIG sounding) it's the bart by a mile imo.

Interesting. Between the Nordy and Duncan, which would you say sounds most similar to the current EB SR5's? I, unlike Falex, happen to like the bright tone. The Bart would definitely not be for me. Thanks for your input Kabong! It's exactly what I've been searching for.

In fact, the one that will be a drop-in replacement will be this one:

The bart was definitely not for me either. I can't answer your question directly re the nord/duncan as I've only played an sr5 in a shop, years ago. What I can say is I remember really liking the tone (I'd own one if the string spacing was wider). It's been a while since I had the duncan in my lakland as I prefered the nord. The biggest difference between the two is in the mids. If I remember correctly the nord has a more open sound, better string to string balance and more upper mid but slightly less treble (just a bit). I like brightness in my tone too, the nord isn't dark. It's a very nice pickup, sounds great when you dig in. Nord makes a point of saying their pickup is designed as per a pre EB stingray so that's probably a fair indication of which way to go. Hope that's some help.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll go with the Nordy.
