Pickup and tone options for two humbuckers . . .

I'm working on an ERB Bass Project (think "Tapper") that will be evocative of a Strat or P-Bass, and I'm looking at doing two basic humbuckers positioned where J or PJ pickups would normally be located. I'm trying to think of what bass sounds would be good for two humbuckers. I'm thinking basic N, N/B, and B sounds, dual coil and single coil options, and so on, but basic stuff. I've heard of things such as inner coils vs. outer coils and so on, but I don't want the pickguard to look like mission control, especially since I have the guitar set of strings to look at.

Any ideas? I want versatility and simplicity.

C.
