Pickup under scratchplate?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just an idea of mine... I've had a bit of a Pbass hunger recently but find the 1 pickup thing a bit too limiting (albeit a great bass i prefer having a few sounds up my sleeve from any one guitar) and being a big sheehan fan I was wondering if it would be able, or has been done before, to have a neck humbucker, model one style, sunk under the scratchplate, possibly with the pole pieces sticking through drilled holes so that it wouldn't get in the way of slapping and would add a hidden weapon to the bass.

I fugured it'd have to be pretty strong to match the volume of the P p'up while being further from the strings but I love the ida of having the punch and growl of Pbass and the huge bottom end boom of a mudbucker hudden away like a bomb for use when appropriate.

Any ideas on how to do this, would it work, pickup suggestions etc?

It's been done before. The Yamaha Attitude Custom had the pickup under the pick guard (plus it had a piezo bridge)

anyone know of any REALLY loud pickups for mudbucker position to be hidden under the pickguard?

loud enough to be equal in output to the jazz pups?

Don't know about "loud" specifically, but the Attitude bass comes stock with Dimarzio pickups, which are extremely high output. Might give the Will Power neck pickup a try...
